Print Awareness: Designing for Print

Graphic design is so much more than placing elements on a page. Print, websites and multimedia all have different requirements. Print Awareness: Designing for Print identifies the common issues encountered between the digital design process and the mechanical manufacture of print.


Aim:
This introductory module equips participants with a broad understanding of the design process. With an emphasis on 'best practice' when designing for print, this course helps you to avoid the common and often costly issues that can create problems at the printing and finishing stages.

Prerequisites:

No prior experience in printing is necessary - although application is open to persons wishing to advance their knowledge of print production and procedures.

Topics include:

1. Introduction
· Define design and the process of designing for print.
· Identify the advantages of planning.
2. Conceptualising
· Identify the end product and associated cost implications.
· Discuss how to plan a brief. Use the brief to plan the project.
· Compare good and not so good design.
· Consider readability in print.
· Identify common issues with font attribute selection and hindrances rather than enhancements.
3. Digital set-up
· Introduce the common design software packages.
· Identify the functionality of the following:
o Image editing software
o Illustration software
o Page layout software
o PDF creation and the Adobe Acrobat suite.
· Discuss requirements for image and graphic quality.
· Compare the difference between vector and raster art.
· Identify the functionality of the following colour models:
o CMYK (process colour)
o Pantone Matching System (PMS)
o RGB
o 1 bit colour and 8 bit colour
· Identify file sizes, file formats and associated implications.
· Discuss taking raw text data to design layout.
· Identify the issues of using images from the internet.
