COURSE DESCRIPTION

'Print Sales' is developed and delivered in a style to meet each participant at their individual levels. It is designed on a simple, proven, building block approach and facilitated by a Printing Industry stalwart with 25 years experience in both buying and selling print.

It has been designed to assist sales persons, including client services staff, sales reps and sales managers to determine and understand the customer's needs and buying motives, as well as to develop the confidence and skills required to:

1) Analyse, structure and prioritise their client base.
2) Build trusting relationships quickly.
3) Develop themselves personally.
4) Manage objections, including the ones that aren't raised.
5) Write effective proposals.
6) Understand competition.
7) Close more sales, more effi ciently.

The course also includes:

  • Personality & Behavioural Profiling
  • Helping to understand each client better, to target their needs and avoid their potential turn-offs.
  • Insights to what may be working against you.
  • Video Role Plays: - An actual real life simulation of a sales call.

The classroom based components are 40 hours duration, run in 8hr sessions, one day a week over 5 weeks.

Print Awareness: Print Production Techniques
Printing is a diverse industry encompassing many processes. Print Awareness: Print Production Techniques is an introductory course outlining printing and finishing work flows. There is also advice on how you can achieve great results and get the most from your printing budget.


Aim:
This introductory module equips participants with a broad understanding of commercial print. With an emphasis on printing processes and production workflow, it will enable candidates to define and communicate their individual printing requirements.

Prerequisites:
No prior experience in printing is necessary - although application is open to persons wishing to advance their knowledge of print production and procedures.
Topics include:
1. Introduction
· Discuss the processes of printing, finishing and associated manufacture.
· Discover the diverse industry of printing.
· Identify what will be covered throughout the day.

2. Printing processes
· Identify the major printing processes including:
o Digital Printing
o Offset Lithographic printing
o Gravure printing
o Flexographic printing
o Letterpress printing
o Screen printing

3. Workflow and requirements
· Compare and contrast desktop printing to commercial printing.
· Compare and contrast digital printing to lithographic printing.
· Identify job specifications and appropriate printing processes for specific work.
· Discuss possible problems that may be encountered.
· Identify printing workflow procedures including:
o Determining the product
o Preparing the artwork
o Job scheduling
· Employing proofing and approval procedures

4. The end product
· Discover finishing processes including trimming, folding, laminating, varnishing, packaging, binding and book work.
· Embellishment, plastic extrusion, die cutting and special requirements are discussed.
· Production for the following will be discussed:
o Stationery and brochures
o Bookwork and multiple pages
o Packaging and cartoning
o Promotional printing

5. Ink on paper
· Discuss paper and paperboard quality and characteristics.
· Identify characteristics of ink for the different printing processes.

6. Quotes and costs
· Determine costs involved.
· Compare quotes and pricing structures.

Graphic design is so much more than placing elements on a page. Print, websites and multimedia all have different requirements. Print Awareness: Designing for Print identifies the common issues encountered between the digital design process and the mechanical manufacture of print.


Aim:
This introductory module equips participants with a broad understanding of the design process. With an emphasis on 'best practice' when designing for print, this course helps you to avoid the common and often costly issues that can create problems at the printing and finishing stages.

Prerequisites:

No prior experience in printing is necessary - although application is open to persons wishing to advance their knowledge of print production and procedures.

Topics include:

1. Introduction
· Define design and the process of designing for print.
· Identify the advantages of planning.
2. Conceptualising
· Identify the end product and associated cost implications.
· Discuss how to plan a brief. Use the brief to plan the project.
· Compare good and not so good design.
· Consider readability in print.
· Identify common issues with font attribute selection and hindrances rather than enhancements.
3. Digital set-up
· Introduce the common design software packages.
· Identify the functionality of the following:
o Image editing software
o Illustration software
o Page layout software
o PDF creation and the Adobe Acrobat suite.
· Discuss requirements for image and graphic quality.
· Compare the difference between vector and raster art.
· Identify the functionality of the following colour models:
o CMYK (process colour)
o Pantone Matching System (PMS)
o RGB
o 1 bit colour and 8 bit colour
· Identify file sizes, file formats and associated implications.
· Discuss taking raw text data to design layout.
· Identify the issues of using images from the internet.
