1. Australian Workplace Agreements
Over recent months the number of Print companies implementing AWA’s has grown considerably. Printing Industries is helping a large number of Vic and Tassie members to develop agreements appropriate to their businesses – both large and small. Although there are “standard” AWA documents, the reality is that each print company is different and there are no two businesses with identical AWA’s. If you need assistance in developing yours, or would simply like to understand whether an AWA is appropriate for your circumstances, please contact either Jim Hargrave or Stefanie Nitze. A standard draft AWA is available on the Printnet Website.

3. Young Printing Industry Professionals needed to showcase industry to students
Do you have anyone on your staff that you would like to nominate to be an ambassador for our industry? As you will be aware, manufacturing industries in Australia are finding it difficult to attract young talented staff because of the perceived “no future” for manufacturing in Australia. To help address this problem, the Victorian Office of Manufacturing is developing a program where young people currently working in manufacturing present to Year 9 and 10 students at school about their career experience so far and what their thoughts are for the future. All up, it will be 3-4 days over a 12 month period. If you have someone you would like to nominate, please contact Michelle for details.
4. National Packaging Covenant
The official deadline has passed for current signatories to re-sign the new Covenant and submit their final report against their previous action plan and there are still a significant number of companies and organizations yet to do so. As this deadline has passed, the Compliance Enforcement process detailed in Schedule 3 will be implemented for those relevant signatories who fail to re-sign or signal their intention to do so.
A
reminder of forthcoming obligations:
1. All
signatories must submit a Report for the period ending 30 June
2005, against their
current action plan and commitments, as soon as possible.
2. A new Action Plan under the strengthened Covenant, must be submitted by no later than 30 November 2005
5. OH&S Refresher Training
One of the requirements in the new Victorian OH&S Act 2004 is for employers to allow representatives to attend a Refresher course of 1-day (approved by WorkCover) at least once in each year, after completing the initial 5 day course. Employers who refuse their H&S representatives and deputies to attend such a course are liable to a fine not exceeding $6,000 (natural person – ie. manager) and $30,000 (body corporate). Printing Industries plans to conduct a Refresher course late in January or early February. Date for this course will be confirmed in next week’s newsPrint.

In September, the unemployment rate rose from 5.0 percent to 5.1 percent, while the number of employed fell along with the participation rate. However, due to the volatility of the month to month labour force changes a one-month increase or decrease needs to be considered in light of further data. In trend terms the month the unemployment rate was stable, while the number of employed continue to grow. Over the year to September 2005 employment has grown by 3.3 percent.
