1. George Gatehouse Honoured At Manufacturing Hall of Fame Gala
The Manufacturing Hall of Fame gala event was held last night . Over six hundred industry leaders attended the event, including Printing Industry attendees, where the Minister for Manufacturing and Export, Andre Haermeyer, congratulated the inductees. "Victorian manufacturers are constantly improving the way they cater to niche markets and developing a point of difference to compete globally," Mr Haermeyer said. "The Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame is an opportunity for our most innovative companies and individuals to be recognised, hopefully encouraging others to follow in their footsteps."
The Victorian Government issued George with a a Hall of Fame Honour Roll award for his contribution to printing in Australia – and specifically his development of the book-printing industry in Victoria. The Printing Industries Association congratulates George for this richly deserved award.
2. RMIT’s Elisha Carter wins Gold at the World Skills National Championships
After being selected to represent Victoria, Elisha Carter, a Graphic Prepress apprentice who studied at RMIT’s, International Centre of Graphic Technology, has won the Gold Medal at the 2006 National WorldSkills Finals. The WorldSkills competition, held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, is the Olympics event for vocationally trained graduates from around Australia. It is an intensely competitive and draining event where each State representative competes in their chosen vocation, over three full days. It is the competition that sets a national standard and the benchmark for skills required in the graphic prepress sector, by having the competitors undertake “real work” in a competitive production environment.
Elisha is employed by the Warrnambool Standard, where she is one of two Graphic Artists working in the commercial sector. Elisha’s dedication and enthusiasm for the job is acknowledged by all of her peers, teachers and by everyone who comes into contact with her. Elisha’s dedication and commitment to the task at hand was recognized by becoming the 2006 WorldSkills Victorian Country Printing and Graphic Arts, Apprentice of the Year. Congratulations from all your Printing Industry friends.

Australia's first action plan written on sustainable paper to cut water
use
Australia's
plantation products and paper manufacturing industry (A3P) has launched its
first sustainability action plan, which raises 21 issues and will see the industry
commit to reducing water, chemical and energy
use.
"We adopted a product
stewardship approach in developing the plan because effective results require
action from everyone along the product lifecycle, including growers,
manufacturers, importers, governments and consumers – who all share
responsibility for environmental impacts," said Rob Lord, A3P
chairman.
Pulp and paper is one of
Australia's biggest industries,
with annual sales of over $14 billion. Actions identified in the
plan include encouraging the use of "greenhouse friendly" plantation products to
offset climate change, increasing water use efficiency and improving discharges
quality.
4. Victorian Export Awards
The Minister for Manufacturing and
Export, André Haermeyer this week launched the 2006 Governor of Victoria Export
Awards. These awards are aimed at Victorian companies that are
successfully exporting.
The awards will be presented across 14 categories during a formal
ceremony at Government House in October. Relevant categories for our
industry are small to medium manufacturing, micro to small business.
“Victorian winners will then go on to become finalists in the 2006
Australian Export Awards in November, for a chance to become the Australian
Exporter of the Year,” Mr Haermeyer said. If you need assistance to apply
for these awards, please contact Michelle
Eeles.
5. New Course - Team Effectiveness
Following feedback from our “New Manager/Supervisor” course, a 2 day course designed specifically for team leaders is now being offered.
Today’s workplace relies more heavily on team effectiveness than the traditional hierarchical organisation structures. This course is designed to enhance the team leader’s abilities in developing a high-performance team and to achieve high-performance from their staff. A team leader needs to understand team functioning and be able to manage this process. The course is designed for Supervisors, team leaders, team members, frontline managers and managers whose achievement will, to some degree, be determined by the effectiveness of the team they lead. To read more about this course please request a flyer from Elaine Brodie. The course is planned for June 7 and 8.
