1. Printing Industries Vic Quarterly Function – 14 September 2005……“The Howard Government Reform Agenda”
Thank you to the 40 people who attended last Wednesday night’s quarterly function at Kooyong. We heard from Commissioner Bill Mansfield, one of the Commissioners from the Victorian branch of the Australian Industrial Relations Committee. Bill informed us of the details that have been released so far by the Federal Government and also gave his interpretation of what the industrial landscape might look like after the Howard reforms are implemented. As most of you would be aware, the legislation has not been passed in parliament so the detail is not available. Bill asked us not to publish his speech, however if you would like to discuss any IR issues relating to your business, please contact Jim Hargrave.

3. Congratulations to Label Link’s Margaret Spiteri - Telstra Business Woman of the Year Finalist 2005
Margaret was nominated by her employees earlier this year for the “Telstra Business Woman of the Year 2005.” She was recently informed that she is one of 6 finalists, with the winner to be announced October 7 at Crown Casino.
Margaret first entered the printing industry as a broker in the early 1990’s. By 1997 she took the plunge and started her own business – Label Link Australia. The printing industry is renowned as being male dominated; being a female and starting afresh she found the task to gain respect challenging but never anything that she could not overcome.
Margaret has said her success has to do with the team that she has developed as her business continues to expand. All her staff members are proud of their working environment this is evidenced by the high level of staff morale and the motivation of the Label Link team. When Margaret first started it was just herself and a printer. Today Label Link Australia employs approximately 20 staff (full time and casual). Margaret and Label Link Australia continue to look to the future for ways and methods to better service and supply their customers; there is no doubt of its continued success.

7. Google Print
Google Print enables publishers to promote their books on Google. Google scans the full text of participating publishers’ titles so that Google users can see books that match the topics they are searching on. When users click on a book search result, they’re taken to a Google-hosted web page displaying a scanned image of the relevant page from the book. Each page also contains multiple “Buy this Book” links, which enable users to purchase the book from online retailers. Users may also see contextually targeted Google Ad Words ads on these pages. Publishers will receive a share of the revenue generated from ads appearing on their content. For more information visit www.print.google.com./publisher
8. Training and Education pays off
Research from the US shows that profit-leading firms spend over twice as much on training and education as a percent of payroll as profit challengers. This benchmark is a calculation of total spending (in-house and outside) as a percent of total payroll expenses.
Profit Leaders 4.1% of Payroll Spent on Training and Education
Profit Challengers 2.0% of Payroll Spent on Training and Education
Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, has launched Taking care of spyware, a guide to help Australians protect themselves against spyware on the Internet. The Minister also released submissions received in response to a recent Government review on spyware. Spyware is software that is installed on a computing device and takes information from it without the consent or knowledge of the user and gives that information to a third party. The Taking care of spyware brochure explains how to identify spyware on computers and remove it, and how to protect against it. Further information and Taking care of spyware is available from www.dcita.gov.au/spyware or by emailing Michelle Eeles
