Issue 18 – 2006
1. Federal Budget - Impact on the printing industry
Treasurer Peter Costello's 11th budget delivered on Tuesday night has handed down another multi-billion dollar tax relief package. Printing Industries Manager, Industry and Commercial Policy, Hagop Tchamkertenian, has prepared an explanatory commentary. Specifically Hagop comments:
“As economic growth forecasts for the Australian economy being revised upward for 2006-2007, the printing industry will be faced with an economic environment that is likely to be more conducive to growth and expansion. The package of tax cuts and increased family benefits announced by the Treasurer will provide a welcome stimulus to printing industry economy activity as soon as households start spending their additional income. “
Hagop will be presenting his thoughts about the Federal Budget in our office in Melbourne on Friday, May 19 between 7.30 and 8.30 am. If you would like to attend his post-budget briefing, please email Elaine Brodie.
2. National Print Awards
Tonight in Sydney the industry’s night of nights takes place, the National Print Awards. All of the medallists will be announced tonight, and details of the winners will be on the National Print Awards website on Monday morning. If you would like to purchase one of the books announcing all the medallists, please download the form from the website.
3. Printing History Book Launched
On Tuesday, the former Victorian Premier, Jeff Kennett launched a very special book, “Printers of the Streets and Lanes of Melbourne” written by industry identity, Don Hauser. Don has painstakingly worked over many years to write this book. His family and close friends were there to celebrate the launch of the book. In fact approximately 60 people attended the book launch, many of them themselves part of the history of printing in Melbourne. To read more about the book and to order a copy go to Printers of the Streets and Lanes of Melbourne. The book costs $37 plus $5 postage and packaging.
4. New Course - Team Effectiveness
Following feedback from our “New Manager/Supervisor” course, we understand that a 2 day course designed specifically for team leaders would be helpful for our industry members.
Today’s workplace relies more heavily on team effectiveness than the traditional hierarchical organisation structures. This course is designed to enhance the team leader’s abilities in developing a high-performance team and to achieve high-performance from their staff. A team leader needs to understand team functioning and be able to manage this process. The course is designed for Supervisors, team leaders, team members, frontline managers and managers whose achievement will, to some degree, be determined by the effectiveness of the team they lead. To read more about this course please request a flyer from Elaine Brodie. The course is planned for June 7 and 8.
5. PrintEx07
One year out from show day 70 per cent of available floor space at PrintEx07 is already gone and organisers are predicting another sell-out event.
PrintEx is firmly making its mark as an important addition to the printing and graphics industries calendar, taking place in the intervening year between editions of the four-yearly Melbourne-based PacPrint. “PrintEx fills an important gap, not only for the Sydney marketplace, but as a showcase for new technologies and product upgrades which are constantly being introduced,” said Grant Churchill, Chairman, PrintEx07.
PrintEx07 will take place in Halls 4, 5 & 6, Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour from Thursday 24 May to Saturday 26 May, 2007. The exhibition is presented by Printing Industries Association of Australia (Printing Industries) and the Graphic Arts Merchants Association of Australia (GAMAA). 6. Careers / Student Activity
This week we took a group of approx 25 students from Templestowe, Vermont and Forest Hills Secondary Colleges to visit Printgraphics, Mt Waverley and Print Bound, Blackburn. The students, from year 10, have expressed an interest in finding out more about our industry. The students were given a 15 minute briefing by senior management at both premises about their work history and what its like to work in a printing business and then were taken on a plant tour. Thanks to Mark Randles and Adrian Kennedy for their assistance with these visits.
We have two students looking for apprenticeships who have contacted our office this week:
1. A Rowville young adult who is looking for a Pre-Press Apprenticeship – has done a number of casual jobs over the past years in the industry and would like to get some an apprenticeship to further his career and get a permanent position.
2. A Doncaster Year 12 student who is looking for a Printing Apprenticeship. His career teacher tells me he is enthusiastic and ready to take on an apprenticeship.
Please email Michelle Eeles if you would like to make contact with either of these people.
