1.       Proposed Seminar with Thailand Board of Investment

Although most Print companies may see Asia as a threat, rather than an opportunity, there are a number of members exporting to this part of the world. In October, representatives of the Thailand Board of Investment are visiting Australia, and have offered to meet with Printers to discuss possible opportunities.

Is Thailand Your Commercial Target??  There are many reasons why it should be on your agenda.

 

Printing Industries Association in Victoria  has arranged a seminar  targeted to those companies with an interest in gaining information on Thailand’s commercial attractiveness.  The information will be presented by executives from the Thailand Board of Investment and industry experts.  The aspects to be covered

2.         Printing Industry Trends

Would you be interested in participating in the quarterly Printing Industry Trends survey?  Your commitment would be 10-15 minutes each quarter and the benefit for you is receiving the final report for free.   The survey is an important piece of industry research which is widely read by the industry.  If you are interested, please contact Hagop Tchamkertenian and provide your contact details and your preferred email address for the research.  Members and non-members are welcome to participate.

 

3.         Victorian Premier’s Business Sustainability Awards

Entries are now open for the 2005 Premier's Business Sustainability Awards. The awards recognise Victorian businesses that are finding innovative ways to minimise their impact on the environment, while strengthening their competitive edge. Recycling materials, using less water and reducing emissions are just some of the measures businesses around the world are taking to position themselves for the future. They are now experiencing the dividends of lower costs, improved productivity and preferential entry to international markets. The Premier's Business Sustainability Awards are searching for local leaders in this global challenge. The three categories are small business, large business and the public sector. The Awards will be hosted by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with Department of Sustainability and Environment, the Banksia Environmental Foundation, the Australian Industry Group and the Municipal Association of Victoria.  Applications close 5pm Monday, 17 October 2005.  Application forms are available at: www.dse.vic.gov.au/sustainabilityawards

 

4.         St Kilda Employer seeks Pre Press Apprentice

A couple of weeks ago we were able to assist a young student wishing to gain a prepress apprenticeship for next year.  We have had a request from an employer to find a prepress apprentice.  If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact Michelle.    

 

5.         Industry Professionals – Have you ever thought of Teaching?

RMIT’s International Centre of Graphic Technology (ICGT) is needs fully-qualified tradespeople with extensive post-apprenticeship experience to teach on a sessional basis. Opportunities are for part-time and on-going contract positions in each of the following areas:

·         Post Press – Binding and Finishing technologies, across all sectors, including mail house or newspaper distribution;

·         Flexography/Gravure – Including cardboard box and carton industries.

·         Screen Printing– across the commercial sectors including textiles, paper, boards, plastics and ceramics.

·         Graphic Prepress– Industry applications including QuarkXPress, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Colour Management, Typography, and Systems Management.

Ideally, applicants should possess or be undertaking the Certificate IV Workplace Training and Assessment; however, the Centre will assist in providing elements of this qualification for successful applicants.  For application details please contact John Magnik on +61 3 9925 9462 or email john.magnik@rmit.edu.au

 

6.         Student Seeks 1 day per Week Employment – Morning Peninsula/

As part of a School Based New Apprenticeship, an enthusiastic student is interested in working in Pre- Press design.  Earlier this year he did work experience at Placard.  At Placard he was working in the pre-press area and found it very interesting.  He has some experience using a few designing programs such as Photoshop and Quark Express, and some others.  Using those programs he learnt new designing techniques and designed my own business card.  If you are able to offer this Student a workplace placement for 1 day per week please contact Michelle.

7.         Business R&D Spending

The ABS recently released statistics on business R&D spending.  That statistics show that spending on R&D increased by 10% between 2002-03 and 2003-04, to $7.22 billion, or 0.89 percent of GDP.  Manufacturing and property and business services spent the most on R&D.  Businesses with fewer than 50 employees contributed 26 percent of the total estimate, while businesses with more than 1,000 employees contributed 35 per cent.
