1. IR Reform Briefings
Printing Industries Vic & Tas held well attended member briefings on the proposed legislation and its possible impact on our industry. We are continuing to work on a national level with key influencers in Government to ensure specific Print related issues are promoted and considered. As Unions and States gear up for possible challenges to the legislation, the next few months are looking “volatile”. For up to date information on the legislation email Jim Hargrave.
2. Classification Structure for Graphic Arts (General) Award 2000
More than 16 years of debate over implementation of a new Graphic Arts (General) Award new Classification Structure ended last week. Senior Deputy President Marsh granted the AMWU application for a points based classification structure subject to further modification by the parties within the next 14 days. Her Honour accepted Printing Industries arguments that there was a missing link in the dispute settlement process and this could result in an individual employee forcing the company to use the points system. Senior Deputy President Marsh also accepted Printing Industries submissions regarding the classification definitions and the operative date.
The main outcomes of the decision are:
· An eight level classification and wage structure, which includes new classifications above the traditional trades level, to replace the existing five levels;
· A more defined system of classification of employees into the classification level appropriate to the skills they use in their work;
· The shift into the new classification structure, including assignment of all employees into the eight levels, to be completed by employers within six months of the decision, i.e., 26 April, 2006;
· No loss of pay for employees who are re-classified to a level which has a lower wage rate than they were previously receiving; and
· Absorption of any wage increases resulting from re-classification into existing over-award payments.
