Issue 3 – 2006
1. Emerging Print Markets
Printing employment in Spain grew 12% from 1998 to 2003 …… Ireland’s rise as a notable economy has caused its printing shipments to double in the same time period. Trade agreements account for a great deal of this growth, but modern communications technologies further erode the natural barriers to trade and widen opportunities for buyers and sellers to meet. Constantly improving logistics play a major role as well.
It’s essential to realise that just because print may not be growing in North America (or rapidly in Aus) does not mean it is not growing elsewhere. Business people go where the opportunities lead them. The realisation that there is now an interconnected world print economy rather than a collection of discrete print economies is hard for many to get used to … but it’s critical that global thinking become second nature to all managers.

2 Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund
On Saturday 28 January, the Victorian Government announced the opening of the second round of the Sustainability Fund. Applications for Round Two will be open for seven weeks and close 5pm on Friday 17 March 2006.
The Fund is a means of providing support to a wide range of projects, large and small, promoting environmental and community sustainability. If you think you have a practical and innovative project that will help make Victoria more environmentally sustainable, you may be eligible for funding through the Sustainability Fund.
Alternatively, you may have an idea which would be better as a joint project with customers / other printers / suppliers. Printing Industries can provide support and advice to help a submission. For further info please contact Tony Duncan or you can download the Application Form and Information Pack directly from Sustainability Victoria - www.sustainability.vic.gov.au.

4. Smoking Laws - Victoria
New smoking laws come into operation in Victoria from 1 March 2006. The new law prohibits smoking in any enclosed area of the workplace and provides for penalties of between 1 and 5 penalty units for the person smoking and the person in charge of the enclosed workplace at the time the smoking occurs (the employer). Each penalty unit is equal to $104.81. If you would like a copy of a leaflet explaining the changes in the laws, please contact Michelle Eeles. If you need clarification about implementing this in your workplace, please contact Jim Hargrave.
5. Super Update
A recent "AXA Retirement Scope" survey found that only 18% of working Australians knew their retirement income. 50% believed they will be comfortable in retirement but did not know why! Whether you are in Print Super or not, topping up your superannuation contributions makes a lot of sense, especially at an early stage in your career. Go to Super Calculator to see what the numbers look like for you.
