Issue 21 – 2006
1.
Industry takes control of waste stream
management
Industry
organisation for environmental responsibility takes shape with the formation of
the Printing and Writing Paper Stewardship Association. The Printing Industries’ brainchild has become
a reality following the approval of the constitution, the appointment of a board
of directors chaired by Stephen Anstice from IPMG and the selection of Tony
Duncan, former Printing
Industries Victorian and Tasmanian regional manager, as its new CEO.
The role of the new organisation is to respond to growing demands by Government for manufacturers to be responsible for the products they produce from the beginning of the production cycle until the end, known as Extended Producer Responsibility.
2. Budget Delivers WorkCover Savings For Business
Victoria’s WorkCover premiums have been slashed to a historic low, delivering a massive $170 million saving a year to business, WorkCover Minister John Lenders said earlier this week. Mr Lenders said that for the third year in a row the Bracks Government would reduce the average premium rate by 10 per cent, providing a major competitive boost to Victorian businesses. “The average WorkCover premium rate in Victoria is now 1.62 per cent – the lowest level in the scheme’s history.
“The 10 per cent cut from 1 July this year will mean Victorian businesses have an average premium rate 25 per cent lower than in NSW and 46 per cent lower than in South Australia.”
(It’s pleasing to see some respite for Manufacturing businesses, but more support is needed – ed)
3. Wage Survey
Printing Industries Victoria is currently conducting a wage survey for staff involved in our industry, including administration, sales, printers, assistants, finishers etc. The deadline for the survey has passed, but we can still receive your survey for the next week if required. If you would like the results of the survey you must participate; the survey is not available to companies who do not contribute. If you have misplaced your copy of the survey form and want to contribute, please contact Jim Hargrave.

Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator the Hon Helen Coonan has introduced legislation to create a $33 million national Do Not Call Register. The Do Not Call Register Bill 2006 and the Do Not Call Register (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2006 provide a framework to establish a Register that would allow individuals to opt-out from receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls. Small businesses will not be included on the register to ensure that business-to-business calls are not affected. The Australian Government will contribute more than $17 million towards the cost of establishing the Register, with the telemarketing industry contributing $15.9 million over four years.

The Mt Martha lady who wants a pre-press apprenticeship or traineeship is still available. She would like employment in the Braeside or Mornington Peninsula areas. If you wish to interview her, please contact Michelle Eeles.
